Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources John Streicker has issued the following statement:

“Yesterday, the Government of Yukon submitted proposed modifications to the Recommended Dawson Regional Land Use Plan to the Dawson Regional Planning Commission. This marks a significant milestone in the land use planning process for the Dawson region and is a key step in fulfilling our obligations under Chapter 11 of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Final Agreement.

The federal and territorial governments are investing more than $4.1 million in the planning and design for a new recreation centre in Dawson City and upgrades to air ventilation systems in municipal buildings in Watson Lake.

“This week, from November 24 to 30, we observe National Addictions Awareness Week, an important time to highlight solutions for addressing the challenges associated with addictions. This year’s theme, Forging Connections, reminds us of the vital role that collaboration and understanding play in supporting individuals, families and communities impacted by addictions.

The Government of Yukon, in partnership with the Yukon Lottery Commission and Sport Canada, is investing over $2 million, an increase of $320,000 from last year, in territorial sport organizations, special recreation groups, athletes and officials.

This annual funding represents an investment aimed at strengthening and growing sport and recreation across the territory.

The Government of Yukon is cracking down on white collar crime with Bill No. 43, Act to Amend the Business Corporations Act (2024), which received royal assent yesterday in the Yukon Legislative Assembly. These amendments will enhance transparency around the ownership and control of Yukon corporations, supporting investigations into activities like money laundering and tax evasion.

The Government of Yukon participated in the Yukon Geoscience Forum and Trade Show, held this year from November 17 to 20. The annual event features presentations from leaders in the Yukon’s mineral exploration and mining industries, as well as the latest geoscience updates from experts at the Yukon Geological Survey.

“On the fourth Saturday of November each year, we commemorate the victims of the human-caused famine of 1932 to 1933 that killed millions of people in Ukraine.

“The Ukrainian famine and genocide – Holodomor – was part of a larger famine across the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics from 1931 to 1934 that resulted in the deaths of at least five million people from hunger, including no fewer than 3.9 million Ukrainians whose communities were deliberately prevented from receiving food.
