Statement from Premier Pillai on Holodomor Memorial Day

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“On the fourth Saturday of November each year, we commemorate the victims of the human-caused famine of 1932 to 1933 that killed millions of people in Ukraine.

“The Ukrainian famine and genocide – Holodomor – was part of a larger famine across the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics from 1931 to 1934 that resulted in the deaths of at least five million people from hunger, including no fewer than 3.9 million Ukrainians whose communities were deliberately prevented from receiving food.

"Especially now, as Ukraine continues to stand against Russia’s full-scale invasion and illegal war of aggression, it is our responsibility to continue to support Ukrainians and members of the Yukon’s Ukrainian community and to help preserve the history of the Holodomor.

“Tomorrow, on the 91st anniversary of the Holodomor, we pledge once again to always remember the millions of innocent people who were deliberately starved to death.

“On Holodomor Memorial Day, we each pay tribute to Ukrainians of the past and to Ukrainians of today who continue to battle for their lives and for their country’s freedom.”
